China Activates World’s Largest Compressed Air Energy Storage Facility
China has brought online the world’s largest compressed air energy storage (CAES) facility, located in the central Jiangsu province. This 600 megawatt plant marks a milestone in the country’s efforts to expand its energy storage capacity and support the integration of renewable energy into its power grid.
The new CAES installation operates by storing electrical energy in the form of compressed air, which can be released to generate electricity when demand is high or renewable output is low. This technology helps to balance fluctuations inherent in renewable sources like wind and solar, enhancing grid stability.
