Sales of Russian-Made Laptops Plunge Nearly 70% in 2025 Amid Import Substitution Struggles

In 2025, the Russian consumer electronics market witnessed a significant decline in the sales of domestically produced laptops, according to data provided by electronics manufacturer Fplus and reported by Forbes. Retail sales of Russian-made notebooks fell sharply, dropping between 65% and 69% year-over-year.

Challenges for Domestic Laptop Market Share

The total number of Russian-made laptops sold at retail locations throughout 2025 was estimated to be between 140,000 and 160,000 units. These sales generated between 8 billion and 9.5 billion rubles in revenue. Despite efforts aimed at import substitution to boost local computing hardware production, domestic laptops accounted for no more than 5.5% of the overall Russian retail laptop market.

This downturn highlights considerable challenges faced by the Russian laptop manufacturing sector, which has struggled to maintain momentum and increase its foothold in a market traditionally dominated by international brands. The steep decline in sales points to issues that may include limited consumer demand, competitive pricing pressures, supply chain constraints, or perceived gaps in product quality and availability.

The sharp contraction in unit sales and market share further complicates the country’s ambitions to reduce reliance on foreign technology imports through domestic alternatives. Observers suggest that reversing this trend will require strategic adjustments in production, marketing, and innovation within the Russian electronics industry to better meet consumer expectations and improve competitiveness.

As of 2025, despite governmental and industry initiatives supporting import substitution policies across various technology segments, the laptop segment’s progress appears hindered by ongoing market dynamics and operational challenges. The outlook for Russian-made laptops remains uncertain as the sector seeks pathways to regain growth and consumer trust in a highly competitive environment.

In 2025, Russian-made laptop sales in retail dropped by almost 70%, failing to capture more than 5.5% market share.
