Megafon Activates First Russian-Made Base Station in a Million-Population City
Russian telecom operator Megafon has started commercial operations of the country’s first domestically produced base station in a city with over one million inhabitants. The deployment took place in the historic center of Nizhny Novgorod, marking a significant milestone in Russia’s telecommunications industry.
The new base station, developed in partnership with telecom equipment manufacturer Yadro—a member of the ICS Holding group—aims to provide enhanced mobile internet speeds and reliable voice communications to the area’s residents. This local infrastructure advancement supports the ongoing modernization and expansion of Russia’s digital network capabilities.
Domestic Tech Integration in Urban Network
The introduction of this Russian-made base station into a major urban environment demonstrates the growing emphasis on using homegrown technologies to build and upgrade critical telecom infrastructure. Megafon’s collaboration with Yadro exemplifies efforts to reduce dependency on foreign equipment while fostering innovation within the national market.
The location of the deployment in Nizhny Novgorod is strategic, as the city stands as one of Russia’s largest metropolitan centers. By deploying advanced telecommunications hardware in such key areas, Megafon is enhancing the quality and accessibility of mobile connectivity for millions of users, aligning with broader digital industry goals.
The official presentation of the base station occurred during the “Digital Industry of Industrial Russia” conference held on May 18. This event highlighted the role of domestic technologies in supporting the country’s digital transformation and industrial advancement.
This initiative represents a crucial step towards more independent and resilient telecommunications infrastructure in Russia. While specific technical or commercial details were not disclosed, the activation signals progress in integrating Russian-developed equipment within major city networks and improving overall service performance.
Megafon and Yadro have launched the first Russian-made base station in Nizhny Novgorod, enhancing mobile internet and voice services.
