Loongson’s 3B6000 CPU Lags Behind AMD Ryzen 5 9600X in Recent Benchmarks
Chinese semiconductor company Loongson has been developing processors based on its own LoongArch instruction set architecture, introduced in 2020. Recently, the tech resource Phoronix conducted tests on Loongson’s latest desktop chip, the 3B6000 model, to evaluate its performance against established competitors.
Performance Comparison Highlights
The Loongson 3B6000 processor features 12 cores with simultaneous multithreading (SMT) support, allowing it to handle up to 24 threads concurrently. Despite this, benchmark results show that the CPU’s overall performance falls significantly behind that of AMD’s Ryzen 5 9600X.
On average, the 3B6000 was measured to be approximately three times slower than the Ryzen 5 9600X across a series of tests that involved multi-threaded workloads. This performance gap underscores the challenges Loongson faces in competing with established x86 processors in the desktop segment, despite advancements in its proprietary architecture.
Loongson’s focus on creating homegrown processor technology seeks to offer alternatives to global industry leaders, particularly within the context of China’s broader push for technological self-reliance. The LoongArch architecture represents a strategic move away from dependencies on foreign instruction sets.
While the 3B6000’s performance currently trails behind more mature products from AMD, continued development and optimization of both hardware and software could help narrow this gap over time. However, at present, the results highlight the maturity and efficiency advantages held by well-established CPU designs in the consumer desktop market.
