Russia to Launch 5G Networks in Major Cities This Summer with Limited Speed Gains
Russian regulators are preparing to authorize the deployment of 5G wireless networks in major urban centers as early as this summer. The move involves allocating frequencies in the 4.63 to 4.99 GHz range to key telecom operators, including VimpelCom (operating under the Beeline brand), MTS, Megafon, and T2. This action marks a significant step toward introducing fifth-generation mobile technology in Russia.
Frequency Allocation for 5G Deployment
The State Commission on Radio Frequencies (GKRCh) is overseeing the assignment of the spectrum necessary for 5G services. The selected band, spanning approximately 360 MHz between 4.63 and 4.99 GHz, will enable the rollout of 5G networks in Russia’s major cities. This allocation is a critical prerequisite for operators to build and operate infrastructure compatible with 5G standards.
While 5G typically promises faster data speeds and improved network performance compared to previous generations, officials have indicated that significant speed improvements should not be expected initially. The deployment represents a foundational upgrade that will set the stage for more advanced services and enhanced connectivity over time rather than an immediate surge in download and upload speeds.
Operators granted access to this mid-band spectrum will begin preparations to install 5G-capable base stations and upgrade existing network equipment. The spectrum band chosen is known for a balanced combination of coverage and capacity, well-suited for densely populated urban areas where network demand is high.
Russia’s mobile market is dominated by several key players, with VimpelCom, MTS, Megafon, and T2 collectively serving millions of subscribers. The 5G launch in major cities marks a transition phase in the country’s wireless communication infrastructure, aiming to meet rising connectivity needs and support emerging applications such as smart cities, Internet of Things (IoT), and enhanced mobile broadband.
The official timeline provided by regulatory bodies aims for the summer months, suggesting network availability within a few months.
