Sega Launches Limited Edition Sonic 1 and 2 Cartridges for Genesis at $100 Each
Sega has teamed up with iam8bit to release a new series of game cartridges featuring the classic Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 titles for the Sega Genesis console. These special edition cartridges are part of the Sonic 35th Anniversary Legacy Cartridge Collection, designed with collectors and longtime fans in mind.
Commemorating Sonic’s Milestone with Premium Retro Releases
The new cartridges give players and collectors the opportunity to own physical editions of two of Sonic’s most iconic games, originally launched in the early 1990s. The releases highlight Sega’s effort to celebrate three and a half decades of the Sonic franchise by revisiting the roots of the series in a tangible format.
Priced at $99.99 each, these cartridges target dedicated collectors rather than the general gaming market, reflecting both the nostalgic value and premium nature of the offering. Pre-orders for the Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 cartridges are currently open, allowing enthusiasts to secure these limited-run items ahead of their distribution.
By partnering with iam8bit, a company known for crafting high-quality collectible editions of video games and related merchandise, Sega ensures that the presentation and packaging of these cartridges meet the expectations of the collector community. This initiative joins a growing trend of major publishers revisiting classic games and offering them as physical collector’s items in response to the ongoing popularity of retro gaming.
While no additional technical enhancements or new content have been announced, the new cartridges reaffirm the enduring appeal of the Sega Genesis and the Sonic series. This release not only serves as a nostalgic reminder for longtime fans but also as a unique collectible that highlights the cultural impact of Sonic the Hedgehog over the past 35 years.
Sega and iam8bit offer collectors new Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic 2 cartridges for Genesis as part of the 35th Anniversary Legacy Collection.
