Logitech Abandons Portable Gaming Consoles After G Cloud Setback
Logitech has decided to step away from the portable gaming console market after the underwhelming performance of its G Cloud streaming device. The company’s newly appointed head of its gaming division, Robin Piispanen, confirmed that there are currently no plans to develop a successor to the G Cloud.
Focus Shifts Away from Portable Consoles
In an interview with The Verge, Piispanen addressed the fate of Logitech’s G Cloud device, which represented the company’s attempt to capitalize on the growing trend of game streaming by delivering a dedicated handheld console. Despite initial interest, the product did not meet commercial expectations, leading to a strategic reevaluation of Logitech’s priorities in the gaming space.
“At this moment, we have more important initiatives than building a second G Cloud,” Piispanen stated, signaling a clear pivot away from hardware aimed exclusively at portable streaming gaming. This marks a retreat from the niche segment the G Cloud attempted to address.
The G Cloud was envisioned as a device specifically designed to stream games from cloud services, aiming to offer a convenient, portable experience without the need for traditional gaming hardware. However, the market response indicated limited consumer demand, and many purchasers reportedly ended up not using the device extensively after the initial trial period.
Logitech’s retreat reflects the challenges companies face when trying to carve out space in the increasingly competitive and rapidly evolving gaming hardware landscape. With players like Valve and others continuing to innovate in portable gaming and cloud streaming, Logitech appears ready to redirect its resources toward projects deemed more promising within its broader portfolio.
This shift aligns with a broader industry trend where adaptability and focus on core strengths often dictate product development paths. Logitech’s gaming division is now expected to prioritize areas other than handheld streaming consoles, though specific future directions have not been detailed.
While the G Cloud’s discontinuation will be a setback for those interested in standalone cloud gaming devices, it underscores how market dynamics and consumer habits continue to shape the successful delivery of gaming technology.
Logitech ends its portable gaming console efforts following the commercial failure of the streaming-focused G Cloud device.
