Apple Shifts Significant iPhone Production to India Amid Trade Concerns
Apple has expanded its iPhone assembly operations in India to account for roughly one-quarter of its global production volume. This strategic shift reflects efforts to mitigate risks associated with rising customs tariffs on smartphones imported into the United States.
In response to escalating trade tensions and potential increases in import duties, Apple accelerated the diversification of its manufacturing footprint, moving a substantial portion of iPhone assembly away from China. Over the past year, production in India increased by approximately 53%, representing a considerable portion of the company’s overall smartphone output.
Adjusting the Global Production Landscape
India has become an increasingly important hub for Apple’s manufacturing strategy. This move supports the company’s objective to reduce dependency on any single country for iPhone assembly, ensuring a more resilient and adaptable supply chain in the face of evolving geopolitical and economic factors.
The growth in local production also aligns with Apple’s broader ambition to tap into the Indian market while leveraging competitive advantages such as lower labor costs and supportive industrial policies. The India-based assembly lines contribute to a diversification of Apple’s supply chain, which has historically centered largely around facilities in China.
While the exact volume of iPhones produced in India was not specified, the reported 25% share of total production marks a notable milestone. This adjustment could influence Apple’s manufacturing and logistics decisions going forward, particularly if tariff concerns persist or escalate.
The shift also underscores a trend seen among several technology companies seeking to mitigate risks associated with supply chain concentration. By increasing manufacture in India, Apple positions itself to better navigate the complex international trade environment and maintain steady product availability.
The move to increase iPhone assembly in India is part of an ongoing global realignment of manufacturing operations within the technology sector. Apple’s expansion there is indicative of a strategic effort to balance cost, risk, and market proximity as global trade dynamics continue to evolve.
Apple now assembles about 25% of its iPhones in India, marking a major shift from China due to tariff concerns on US smartphone imports.
