MegaFon Unveils Portable Equipment to Launch 5G and 4G Networks Anywhere in Russia via Domestic Satellite Link
Russian telecom operator MegaFon has showcased a new portable equipment system designed to enable the rapid deployment of private 5G and 4G networks in any location across the country. This innovative solution leverages satellite communication technology, specifically utilizing a domestic counterpart to systems like Starlink, to establish connectivity without dependence on traditional infrastructure.
Deploying Networks Beyond Conventional Boundaries
The newly revealed equipment kit is engineered to deliver cellular coverage within a radius spanning several kilometers from the deployment site. By incorporating satellite links, MegaFon’s system bypasses many geographical and infrastructural challenges typically encountered in expanding network coverage to remote or hard-to-reach areas.
This approach offers significant advantages, especially in regions where laying fiber optic cables or erecting base stations would be costly or logistically difficult. The satellite element acts as a backbone connection, linking the portable station to wider network infrastructure, thus enabling immediate network access for users within the service radius.
While specifics on the technical components and capacities of the setup were not detailed, the concept aligns with broader industry trends emphasizing flexible and resilient telecommunications infrastructure. Such portable solutions could be instrumental in emergency response scenarios, temporary event coverage, and improving connectivity in underserved locations.
The reference to a domestic analogue of Starlink highlights Russia’s efforts to develop and deploy independent satellite internet technologies, reducing reliance on foreign satellite systems and enhancing national digital sovereignty.
MegaFon’s initiative marks a notable step towards versatile network deployment strategies, potentially setting new operational standards for telecom providers in expansive and diverse territories.
MegaFon introduces a portable setup enabling 5G and 4G network deployment across Russia through a local satellite connection.
