Rosatom Delivers First RITM-200S Reactor for Floating Nuclear Power Unit
Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom has produced and dispatched the inaugural RITM-200S reactor unit designed for a floating nuclear power plant. The reactor was manufactured at the ZIO-Podolsk facility near Moscow, part of Rosatom’s Machine-Building Division, and has now been sent to the shipyard for installation.
Advancing Floating Nuclear Power Solutions
The newly completed reactor is intended for the lead floating power unit PEB-106, which will serve an upcoming series of floating nuclear power plants (FNPPs). These FNPPs are planned to support an industrial cluster in Russia’s Far East, particularly focused on copper processing and other industrial activities. This initiative highlights Russia’s commitment to deploying nuclear technology to enhance energy supply in remote and industrially critical regions.
Globally, there are around 80 projects related to small-scale nuclear energy, yet Rosatom stands apart by having tangible hardware delivered for floating nuclear power plants. The company’s RITM series reactors represent a key technological foundation for these mobile, compact energy sources designed to provide reliable electricity in isolated locations or areas with limited infrastructure.
The RITM-200S reactor tailored for floating applications is a variant of the modular reactor technology Rosatom has developed, marking a significant step in the practical implementation of small nuclear power units. The deployment of such floating plants aligns with broader efforts to diversify energy infrastructure and reduce reliance on traditional fossil fuels in Russia’s more remote territories.
While specific technical details and deployment timelines for the floating power units were not disclosed, the delivery of the first reactor signifies a milestone toward operational floating nuclear power plants. These units offer the potential to provide clean, consistent power where conventional grid access is challenging, supporting both local industry and communities.
Rosatom has completed and shipped the first RITM-200S reactor for a floating nuclear power unit aimed at the Russian Far East industrial cluster.
