LG Study Shows Higher Refresh Rates Improve FPS Shooter Performance

LG Display recently released findings from an internal study examining the impact of monitor refresh rates on competitive gaming performance. The research focused specifically on first-person shooter (FPS) games, evaluating how different refresh rates influenced player effectiveness.

Higher Refresh Rates Enhance Shooting Accuracy

The study involved 31 adult male gamers who participated in gameplay sessions on monitors set to refresh rates of 60 Hz, 240 Hz, 360 Hz, and 480 Hz. By comparing performance metrics across these settings, LG Display aimed to quantify the relationship between screen refresh frequency and player reaction and precision in shooter scenarios.

Results indicated that as the refresh rate increased, so did the players’ ability to succeed in the FPS environment. Monitors with faster refresh rates delivered smoother motion rendering and reduced input lag, contributing to superior aiming and shooting results. Players demonstrated improved target tracking and hit accuracy at the highest tested refresh rate of 480 Hz, suggesting that premium monitors offering ultra-high refresh rates can provide a tangible competitive advantage.

While the sample size was limited and involved only male participants, the findings align with broader industry understanding that higher-frequency displays benefit competitive gaming. These insights reinforce the trend among esports enthusiasts and professional gamers toward investing in costly monitors with top-tier refresh rates to optimize in-game performance.

Future research may explore variables such as response time, different game genres, and a wider demographic spectrum. Nonetheless, LG Display’s data adds to the growing evidence that upgrading to a high-refresh-rate monitor can be a worthwhile consideration for players seeking better responsiveness and overall effectiveness in fast-paced shooters.

LG Display’s research finds that gamers perform better in first-person shooters using monitors with higher refresh rates, up to 480 Hz.
