JAXA Completes Successful Flight Test of Reusable Rocket Prototype

Japan’s Aerospace Exploration Agency, known as JAXA, has successfully completed the inaugural flight test of its new reusable rocket prototype, the RV-X (Reusable Vehicle eXperiment). The test took place at the Noshiro test facility in Akita Prefecture on July 11, 2026.

Successful Demonstration of Controlled Vertical Landing

During the approximately 40-second test flight, the RV-X lifted vertically to an altitude of about 11 meters before hovering. It then performed a controlled horizontal translation of roughly 16 meters. Concluding the flight, the rocket executed a soft vertical landing, demonstrating precise control over its descent and touchdown.

This achievement marks a significant milestone for JAXA in advancing reusable launch vehicle technology. The ability to recover a rocket vertically and intact is crucial for reducing costs and increasing operational efficiency in space missions.
