Brazil Fines Apple Again Over Missing Chargers in iPhone Packaging
The consumer protection agency of the Brazilian state of Alagoas has imposed a financial penalty on Apple for continuing its practice of selling iPhones without including power adapters. The organization, known as Procon-AL, fined the tech giant 101,627.50 Brazilian reais, which is approximately $20,000.
Controversy Over iPhone Packaging and Charging Accessories
Procon-AL’s decision rests on the determination that the power adapter is an essential item for the regular use of the iPhone. The agency criticized Apple for not including the charger as part of the product packaging, despite the company’s recent moves globally to remove such accessories citing environmental reasons.
This is not the first time Apple has faced scrutiny and fines in Brazil related to this issue. Local consumer protection bodies have expressed concerns that excluding chargers from iPhone boxes may mislead or inconvenience buyers who need a complete package to operate their devices right away.
Apple has maintained that many customers already have charging accessories from previous devices and that removing the power adapter from new iPhone boxes reduces electronic waste. However, regulatory authorities like Procon-AL continue to challenge this rationale, emphasizing consumer rights and the necessity of having all essential components included.
Details regarding how Apple will respond to this latest fine or whether it plans to adjust its packaging approach in Brazil have not been disclosed. The company’s ongoing strategy to exclude power bricks remains controversial and subject to regulatory actions in various markets around the world.
This recent fine reflects increasing regulatory attention to product packaging standards and consumer expectations, especially in the technology sector, where accessory bundling plays a critical role in the overall user experience.
Brazil’s consumer protection agency imposes another fine on Apple for selling iPhones without included power adapters.
