JEDEC Releases UFS 5.0 Flash Memory Standard with Speeds Up to 10.8 GB/s
JEDEC Solid State Technology Association, the global leader in setting memory standards, has officially published the specifications for its latest Universal Flash Storage (UFS) standard, UFS 5.0. This new flash memory specification significantly advances mobile storage capabilities by offering substantially increased data transfer speeds aimed at next-generation smartphones and other high-performance mobile devices.
Substantial Boost in Data Throughput
The UFS 5.0 standard dramatically enhances sequential read and write speeds, reaching up to 10.8 gigabytes per second (GB/s). This marks an almost twofold increase compared to the commonly referenced transfer rate of 5.8 GB/s for devices based on the previous UFS 4.0 standard. Such improvement is intended to support the growing demands for faster, more efficient data handling in mobile computing environments.
Notably, UFS 5.0’s peak throughput surpasses the declared maximum unidirectional bandwidth of the PCI Express (PCIe) 4.0 x4 interface, which is capped at 8.0 GB/s. This advancement positions UFS 5.0 as a highly competitive flash storage technology, pushing the boundaries of speed for embedded storage solutions in smartphones.
The jump in transfer rates signifies potential gains in several smartphone functions, including quicker app loading times, enhanced 4K and 8K video recording and playback, and smoother gaming experiences. With ever-increasing data consumption and processing requirements, faster storage technologies like UFS 5.0 will play a critical role in shaping future device performance.
JEDEC’s continued evolution of UFS standards highlights the organization’s commitment to advancing flash memory technology. By nearly doubling the throughput over its predecessor, UFS 5.0 is set to become a key feature in flagship mobile devices seeking to meet the expectations of power users and content creators.
While detailed adoption timelines and manufacturer implementations of UFS 5.0 have yet to be disclosed, the new specification sets a clear direction for high-speed flash storage in the evolving mobile landscape.
JEDEC unveils UFS 5.0 flash memory standard boasting up to 10.8 GB/s speeds, nearly doubling UFS 4.0 performance for smartphones.
