NASA’s Perseverance Rover Discovers Hidden Ancient River Delta Beneath Mars Surface
NASA’s Perseverance rover has uncovered a concealed ancient river delta beneath Mars’ surface, offering fresh perspective on the planet’s historical landscape and hydrological activity. The discovery sheds light on Mars’ geological past, particularly its ancient water systems, by revealing structures not visible from the planet’s surface.
Subsurface River Delta Revealed Through Georadar Data
Perseverance has been investigating an area known to host an ancient river delta that once flowed into a lake occupying the Jezero crater. Utilizing its onboard ground-penetrating radar, the rover can probe up to 35 meters below the Martian surface, collecting data to map subsurface features.
Over several months, scientists have compiled radar data to develop a comprehensive image of what lies beneath. This effort led to an unexpected finding deep below the surface—a previously undetected river delta far older and larger than the surface formations near the rover’s current location.
This new delta lies hidden beneath layers of Martian soil and rock, underscoring the value of radar technology in exploring planetary interiors. The subtle landforms observed on the surface pale in comparison to the complex subsurface structures now brought to light.
The discovery enhances understanding of Mars’ aquatic history, pointing to extensive fluvial networks that may have contributed to lake formation in Jezero crater.
