Russia Allocates Frequency Bands for Direct Smartphone-to-Satellite Communication
Russia’s State Commission on Radio Frequencies (GKRCH) has officially assigned specific radio frequency bands to facilitate direct smartphone connectivity to communication satellites. This allocation supports the advancement of innovative domestic satellite communication systems designed for direct-to-device (D2D) applications.
The newly designated frequency ranges have been allocated to two Russian space companies: Bureau 1440 and Sputniks. These companies are expected to utilize the bands for the deployment and operation of cutting-edge satellite services allowing smartphones to connect directly to satellites without relying solely on terrestrial networks.
Enhancing Satellite-Based Mobile Connectivity in Russia
The initiative is a part of a broader effort in Russia to develop in-house satellite communication infrastructures that enable seamless connectivity for mobile devices, particularly in regions where traditional cellular coverage may be limited or absent. By enabling direct communication between smartphones and satellites, this technology aims to increase coverage areas, improve communication reliability, and offer new capabilities in emergency and remote scenarios.
The move to support direct-to-device satellite communication aligns with global trends where satellite constellations are being leveraged to provide extended and resilient wireless networks. The frequency bands secured for this purpose will underpin the technical framework needed for future services, potentially transforming how mobile connectivity is delivered across vast and underserved territories in Russia.
Although detailed plans concerning the implementation timeline, technical standards, or commercial rollout were not disclosed, the frequency allocation marks a key regulatory step to facilitate the integration of satellite and mobile technologies. As the space companies begin to develop their systems within the assigned bands, further information on the operational aspects is anticipated.
This regulatory development highlights Russia’s commitment to advancing its satellite communication capabilities and expanding the use of direct-to-device technologies, which could lead to new communication paradigms and enhanced connectivity options for users.
Russia designates radio frequency bands to support domestic direct-to-device satellite communication systems for smartphones.
