Russian Satellite Operator to Provide Internet Access on 135 High-Speed Trains

Bureau 1440, a satellite communications provider part of the ICS Holding group, is set to equip 135 high-speed passenger trains operated by Russian Railways (RZD) with satellite-based internet connectivity. The initiative aims to enhance onboard digital services on prominent train models such as the Lastochka and Sapsan, which run primarily on routes between Moscow and Saint Petersburg.

Expanding Connectivity on Key Russian Rail Lines

The implementation of satellite internet technology will cover a significant portion of RZD’s fleet of fast trains, reflecting growing demand for reliable internet access during travel. Both the Lastochka and Sapsan trains are well-known high-speed services linking Russia’s capital with its major northern city, offering rapid and comfortable transit options for passengers.

This satellite internet integration is expected to provide a more consistent online experience throughout the journey, especially given the limitations of terrestrial network coverage along the route. By leveraging satellite capabilities, Bureau 1440 aims to maintain connectivity even in areas where traditional cellular networks may be weak or unavailable.

The announcement was made through RZD’s official Telegram channel, signaling a collaborative effort to modernize passenger services and align with global trends in transportation technology. While specific details about the installation timeline or the technical parameters of the satellite system were not disclosed, this move marks a significant step in improving digital infrastructure on Russian rail transport.

Given the length and importance of the Moscow–Saint Petersburg corridor, adding satellite internet to the fleet could support various passenger needs, including entertainment, communications, and access to online work resources during travel. This advancement is part of broader efforts to enhance onboard amenities and elevate the travel experience on Russia’s premier high-speed trains.

Overall, Bureau 1440’s project highlights the increasing role satellite technology plays in overcoming connectivity challenges in transportation, ensuring consistent internet access beyond traditional urban and connected zones.

Satellite internet from Bureau 1440 will connect 135 fast trains, including lastochka and sapsan models, running between Moscow and St. Petersburg.
