Samsung Unveils PM9E1, the Smallest 4TB PCIe 5.0 SSD in M.2 2242 Form Factor
Samsung has announced the PM9E1, a new solid-state drive that marks a notable advancement in both storage capacity and compact design. This SSD is the first in the industry to combine a 4-terabyte capacity with PCIe 5.0 support in the space-efficient M.2 2242 form factor.
High-Capacity Storage in a Compact Package
The PM9E1’s introduction addresses a growing demand for high-performance storage solutions that fit into smaller systems without compromising capacity. By delivering 4TB of storage in the M.2 2242 size—measuring only 22 millimeters wide and 42 millimeters long—Samsung enables system builders to integrate large amounts of ultra-fast storage within compact computing environments.
This technological feat opens new possibilities for applications where space is limited but performance requirements remain high. The smaller form factor is especially useful for embedded systems, compact desktops, and specialized devices that require both speed and density from their storage components.
PCIe 5.0 Speeds for Demanding Workloads
Supporting PCIe 5.0, the PM9E1 benefits from the latest generation of the PCI Express interface, which doubles the bandwidth offered by PCIe 4.0. This improvement translates into significantly faster data transfer rates, reduced latency, and enhanced overall system responsiveness.
Such performance capabilities make the SSD particularly well-suited for compute-intensive tasks, including artificial intelligence workloads that demand rapid access to large datasets. Samsung highlights use cases like the Nvidia DGX Spark desktop supercomputer, which features the GB10 chip designed explicitly for AI applications. The PM9E1’s combination of compact size, capacity, and speed aligns with the needs of advanced AI systems and other high-performance computing platforms.
By integrating the PM9E1, manufacturers can better optimize their systems’ storage architectures, potentially improving processing speeds and efficiency in AI model training, inference tasks, and other data-driven operations.
Details regarding pricing, availability, and specific performance metrics have not been disclosed at this time. However, Samsung’s launch of this SSD highlights a trend toward miniaturizing high-capacity, high-speed storage solutions to meet the evolving demands of modern computing hardware.
Samsung introduces PM9E1, the first 4TB PCIe 5.0 SSD in the compact M.2 2242 size, designed for compact systems and AI workloads.
