Toshiba Announces 30-34TB 3.5-Inch SMR Hard Drives for Hyperscale Data Centers
Toshiba has introduced its latest line of 3.5-inch hard disk drives targeting hyperscale infrastructure and cloud service operators. The new M12 series employs shingled magnetic recording (SMR) technology and delivers storage capacities ranging from 30 to 34 terabytes, addressing the increasing demand for greater data density in large-scale data centers.
Toshiba Expands Enterprise Storage Options with High-Capacity SMR HDDs
The M12 series is designed with hyperscalers and large cloud providers in mind, emphasizing higher capacity to meet intensive storage requirements. By incorporating SMR technology, Toshiba is able to push the storage density of these 3.5-inch drives beyond conventional limits, enabling substantial space savings and improved data center efficiency.
SMR works by partially overlapping data tracks on the disk platter, which increases the effective recording density compared to traditional perpendicular magnetic recording methods. This approach is particularly beneficial for sequential write workloads typical in large-scale archival and cold storage implementations.
Alongside the newly introduced SMR models, Toshiba plans to expand the M12 lineup later in 2026 to include drives based on conventional magnetic recording (CMR) technology. These future offerings are expected to provide capacities up to 28 terabytes, appealing to environments where broader compatibility and random write performance are important factors.
The initial availability of these SMR-based HDD samples marks Toshiba’s advancement in addressing the growing storage challenges faced by datacenters handling vast amounts of data. While specifications and pricing details were not provided, this announcement underscores the industry’s continued investment in high-capacity storage solutions optimized for hyperscale and cloud ecosystems.
As the demand for reliable, high-density storage continues to escalate, Toshiba’s M12 series represents a strategic move to enhance its presence in enterprise-grade storage markets by leveraging the benefits of SMR for maximizing capacity on conventional form factors.
Toshiba unveils its new 3.5-inch M12 HDD series featuring SMR technology, offering 30 to 34TB capacity aimed at hyperscalers and cloud providers.
