Ubisoft Sees No Major Impact on Gaming Industry from Sony’s Move to Digital-Only PlayStation by 2028
Sony’s recent announcement to discontinue physical disc production for PlayStation consoles by 2028 has sparked conversations throughout the gaming community about the future of game distribution. However, Ubisoft, one of the world’s leading video game publishers, expressed during a recent analyst meeting that this shift is unlikely to significantly disrupt the broader gaming industry.
Digital Transition Seen as Natural Evolution by Ubisoft
During Ubisoft’s quarterly financial briefing, the company addressed Sony’s decision and its potential implications. Ubisoft’s representatives indicated that moving entirely to digital formats aligns with the existing trends in game consumption, and that the industry has been gradually embracing digital distribution for years.
The publisher highlighted that gamers have increasingly preferred digital purchases due to convenience, easier access, and evolving content delivery methods. As a result, Ubisoft anticipates that the full transition away from physical discs will follow a trajectory already well underway and will not cause major disruption in how games are developed, sold, or experienced.
This perspective underscores a broader industry shift, where digital storefronts and online services have become central to distribution models. Ubisoft’s extensive catalog, which includes digitally popular franchises, positions it to adapt seamlessly to a digital-only environment.
Furthermore, the move is expected to streamline supply chain and manufacturing processes by removing the need for physical production and distribution of discs. While this change may impact retailers and collectors who value physical media, Ubisoft suggests that the overall impact on industry economics and consumer engagement will be manageable.
Despite some concerns from parts of the community regarding digital ownership and game preservation, Ubisoft remains confident that ongoing developments in digital rights management and cloud gaming will address many of these challenges.
As PlayStation prepares to fully embrace digital content delivery over the next several years, Ubisoft’s stance reflects a broader confidence in the gaming industry’s ability to evolve with technological advancements while continuing to meet player demands.
The industry will watch closely as Sony’s roadmap unfolds, but for now, major publishers like Ubisoft anticipate the digital-only future of PlayStation to be a continuation rather than a disruption of established trends.
Ubisoft believes Sony’s plan to end PlayStation disc production by 2028 will have minimal effect on the gaming industry’s future landscape.
