Enthusiast Builds Ultra-Compact PlayStation with microSD and HDMI, Under 2W Power Use
A technology enthusiast and video blogger known as Secret Hobbyist has engineered a highly compact motherboard for the original PlayStation console. This newly designed hybrid board merges top components from multiple revisions of Sony’s classic console, resulting in a custom build that is even smaller than the motherboard found in the PSOne.
Compact Design With Modern Features
The innovative motherboard not only reduces physical size but also integrates contemporary features absent from the original hardware. A key upgrade is the implementation of game storage via microSD cards, eliminating the need for traditional optical media. This allows for easier game management and faster loading times, aligning the classic console experience with modern storage convenience.
In addition, the board provides video output through an HDMI interface, offering compatibility with current displays without the need for adapters. This feature significantly improves the visual connectivity options, making it simpler to integrate the PlayStation into modern entertainment setups.
Despite its compact dimensions and enhanced functionality, the custom motherboard maintains impressively low power consumption. The entire system operates on less than 2 watts of power, showcasing an efficient design that balances energy use with performance.
By combining components from several PlayStation developer revisions, Secret Hobbyist has demonstrated an innovative approach to hardware modification and restoration. This project reflects growing interest in retro gaming hardware that incorporates modern technological conveniences without compromising original gameplay experiences.
The motherboard’s reduced size compared to the PSOne’s board suggests potential for new custom PlayStation builds that prioritize space efficiency. Though pricing and availability of this custom hardware have not been disclosed, the project serves as an inspiring example within the retro gaming and modding communities.
This work underscores how enthusiasts continue to breathe new life into classic gaming devices through thoughtful redesigns and technology integration, preserving their legacy for future audiences while adapting them to today’s digital standards.
A tech enthusiast created a compact PlayStation motherboard featuring microSD storage, HDMI output, and power consumption below 2 watts.
