Waymo Updates Robotaxi Software to Avoid Driving Through Flooded Streets
Waymo, a prominent player in autonomous vehicle technology, has implemented new software adjustments aimed at addressing safety challenges posed by flooded roads. The company’s robotaxi fleet, operating in limited regions across the United States, has been updated to avoid driving through waterlogged streets that can interfere with onboard sensors.
Enhancing Safety for Autonomous Vehicles in Adverse Weather
Current protocols for robotaxi operations in the U.S. typically require services to pause during heavy rain or snow. These weather conditions often create difficulties for the vehicle’s cameras and sensors, which rely on clear visual information to detect obstacles and other road users. Until recently, Waymo’s autonomous cars did not fully account for the risks of encountering floodwater on roadways. This led to instances where the vehicles attempted to cross submerged areas without hesitation, which presented safety concerns.
