South Korean Researchers Develop Deep Wi-Fi for Underground Wireless Communication up to 100 Meters

Scientists at South Korea’s Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) have introduced a breakthrough wireless communication method capable of operating up to 100 meters below the earth’s surface. This development addresses long-standing challenges associated with reliable data transmission in subterranean environments.

Technology Utilizing Magnetic Induction to Overcome Signal Barriers

Traditional radio frequency (RF) signals rapidly weaken and suffer quality degradation when attempting to penetrate soil or other underground materials. To bypass these limitations, the new system relies on magnetic induction principles to maintain consistent communication with devices buried underground. This approach minimizes signal attenuation, ensuring clearer and more stable connectivity compared to conventional wireless methods.
