Chinese Researchers Develop Lithium Batteries That Perform at -34°C Using Semi-Solid Electrolytes
Researchers in China have announced a breakthrough in battery technology, developing lithium-based cells with semi-solid electrolytes that sustain reliable operation in extremely cold environments, down to -34°C. This advancement addresses a long-standing challenge in energy storage related to battery performance in subzero temperatures.
Enhancing Low-Temperature Battery Performance
Batteries typically experience significant performance degradation in cold weather, a limitation that restricts their application in regions with harsh winters or in devices exposed to freezing conditions. Overcoming this issue usually involves adjusting the chemical makeup of batteries, with some past efforts focusing on substituting lithium with sodium to improve frost resistance.
However, the Chinese research team opted for a different approach, concentrating on improving the electrolyte structure within lithium batteries. By developing a semi-solid electrolyte, they effectively enhanced the battery’s durability and functionality at temperatures that would normally cause electrolyte freezing or diminished ion mobility in traditional liquid counterparts.
