China Installs World’s Largest HVDC Inverter Offshore for Wind Power Transmission
In a remarkable advancement for offshore renewable energy infrastructure, Chinese engineers have installed the world’s largest high-voltage direct current (HVDC) inverter in the middle of the sea. This massive facility is a critical component for converting and transmitting wind power generated far from shore to the mainland grid.
Engineering Feat in Offshore Wind Power Conversion
The newly installed HVDC inverter stands approximately the height of a seven-story building and weighs an astonishing 25,000 tons. Its sheer size and scale underscore the ambitions behind enhancing energy transmission from offshore wind farms, which are often located at significant distances from coastlines to optimize wind capture without disrupting coastal areas.
Transferring power generated by offshore wind farms to the onshore grid requires high efficiency and reliability.
