Kioxia Launches EG7 SSD Featuring 218-Layer 3D QLC NAND Technology
Kioxia has introduced a new solid-state drive (SSD), the EG7, which incorporates cutting-edge 218-layer 3D QLC NAND flash memory. This announcement marks a significant addition to the company’s line-up of high-performance storage solutions and expands its portfolio of advanced NAND technologies.
Advanced NAND Flash Technology Powers EG7 SSD
The EG7 utilizes 218 layers of 3D QLC (quad-level cell) NAND, a flash memory structure that enables higher data densities by storing four bits of information per cell. This technology contrasts with Kioxia’s previously showcased BG7 SSD, which featured the same number of layers but employed TLC (triple-level cell) memory instead, which stores three bits per cell.
The BG7 drive, revealed earlier this year, offered capacities ranging from 256 GB up to over 2 TB. It supported sequential read speeds of up to 7 GB/s, write speeds reaching 6 GB/s, and impressive input/output operations per second (IOPS) of up to 1 million, making it suitable for demanding applications.
The newly announced EG7 SSD maintains similar specifications, providing roughly equivalent capacity options and matching performance metrics despite the switch to QLC memory. This suggests that Kioxia has made advancements in QLC NAND technology to close the performance gap traditionally seen between TLC and QLC flash. These improvements are important for users and industries requiring cost-effective, high-capacity drives without sacrificing speed.
By leveraging 218-layer 3D QLC NAND, the EG7 underscores Kioxia’s commitment to pushing flash memory innovation, offering storage solutions that deliver both scale and speed.
