Wavepiston to Launch 50 MW Wave Energy Plant with Freshwater Production in Barbados
Wavepiston, a Denmark-based technology firm, is preparing to develop a groundbreaking wave energy installation off the coast of Barbados. The project is set to generate 50 megawatts (MW) of electricity using the ocean’s wave power, while simultaneously producing desalinated drinking water.
Innovative Dual-Output Wave Energy System
The company has been working on a modular system for nearly three decades that uniquely harnesses ocean wave energy to deliver both clean power and potable water. This dual-output approach aims to address energy and freshwater challenges simultaneously by leveraging the natural movement of sea waves.
Wavepiston recently formalized a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Barbados’ Export Development Agency (BIDC) to advance the development of the country’s first commercial pilot plant based on this technology. The planned 50 MW facility will represent the world’s initial large-scale deployment of this wave energy concept.
The new installation is intended to bolster Barbados’ renewable energy portfolio while providing a sustainable source of fresh water. The system converts wave motion into electrical power and simultaneously operates a desalination process to supply clean drinking water, presenting an integrated solution for island and coastal communities.
By combining renewable power generation with water desalination, Wavepiston’s project aims to optimize coastal resources and reduce reliance on fossil fuels and traditional water imports.
Detailed technical and commercial specifications, including project timeline and costs, have not been publicly disclosed. The initiative highlights a growing interest in innovative ocean energy technologies that address both climate and water scarcity issues in vulnerable regions.
If successful, the Wavepiston installation could become a model for similar marine renewable energy projects globally, leveraging the vast potential of the ocean’s waves to generate sustainable electricity and freshwater simultaneously.
Wavepiston partners with Barbados to build a first-of-its-kind 50 MW wave energy project that also produces desalinated drinking water.
