Deutsche Telekom Achieves Quantum Teleportation Over Commercial Fiber Network in Berlin

Deutsche Telekom’s research division, T-Labs, in partnership with Dutch quantum tech firm Qunnect, has successfully conducted a landmark quantum teleportation test using a commercial fiber optic network in Berlin. This experiment marks one of the earliest practical demonstrations of quantum communication coexisting with conventional internet traffic on existing telecom infrastructure.

Quantum Teleportation Integrated into City Fiber Network

The joint trial utilized Deutsche Telekom’s live, urban fiber network to transmit quantum information alongside normal internet data. Significantly, this was done without any modifications to the underlying network infrastructure, illustrating the feasibility of introducing quantum technologies into current telecommunications systems.

Quantum teleportation is a process by which quantum states are transferred between distant locations without physically moving the underlying particles, leveraging quantum entanglement. Achieving this over a commercial fiber line — as opposed to a dedicated quantum channel — indicates a substantial advancement toward scalable quantum communication networks.

The demonstration in Berlin represents a major step in integrating quantum security and data transmission capabilities into real-world telecom environments. It suggests future possibilities for enhanced secure communications, including quantum key distribution (QKD), leveraging existing internet frameworks.

While many quantum communication experiments have thus far required specialized experimental setups or isolated fiber links, this latest test shows how quantum protocols can operate in parallel with everyday online traffic on standard commercial infrastructure. This coexistence could accelerate the deployment of quantum-enhanced networks for both consumer and enterprise applications.

Details about performance metrics and further development plans were not disclosed, but this trial adds momentum to efforts worldwide to build next-generation quantum internet systems that exploit existing telecommunications infrastructure.

Deutsche Telekom and Qunnect demonstrate quantum teleportation through Berlin’s commercial fiber network without infrastructure changes.
