Sony Halts CFexpress and SD Memory Card Sales Citing Flash Memory Shortage
Sony has announced a suspension of new orders for nearly all models in its CFexpress and SD memory card lines effective March 27, 2026. The move comes amid a continuing shortage of flash memory components impacting the availability of storage solutions across industries.
Supply Constraints Affect Sony’s Storage Product Lines
The affected product range includes Sony’s CFexpress Type A and Type B memory cards, as well as SD cards conforming to SDXC and SDHC standards. This pause in sales is part of a broader challenge posed by limited flash memory supplies, which have pressured manufacturers throughout the electronics sector.
The announcement followed Sony’s earlier communication regarding price increases for its PlayStation 5 consoles, signaling ongoing ripple effects of semiconductor and component shortages on consumer technology offerings.
While Sony has halted accepting orders for these storage cards, it did not disclose details regarding the duration of this suspension or plans for resuming sales in the future.
CFexpress cards, especially Types A and B, offer high-speed storage solutions commonly utilized in professional photography and videography, where rapid data transfer and reliability are crucial. Similarly, SDXC and SDHC cards serve a broad spectrum of consumer devices, from cameras to portable gaming systems.
The lack of availability in these memory card categories could influence content creators and general consumers who rely on Sony-branded media for their storage needs. Meanwhile, the underlying flash memory shortage highlights ongoing challenges in global supply chains that continue to affect technology manufacturers beyond the pandemic era.
Industry experts expect that such shortages will persist until supply can catch up with demand, which depends on factors including manufacturing capacity expansion and material availability. For now, Sony’s decision reflects a cautious approach to managing inventory and supply commitments amidst uncertain component supplies.
Sony suspends orders for most CFexpress and SD memory cards from late March 2026 due to ongoing flash memory supply constraints.
